Scott Bell started upholstering furniture at John Sankey 26 years ago.

In that time, he has learned how different fabrics behave, how much tension something needs, and the small adjustments that separate work that is nearly right from work that is right.

Then there is the knowledge nobody expects to collect.

One exhibition sofa had to be upholstered in artificial grass. It was awkward, unusual and not especially interested in behaving like fabric. But Scott discovered one very useful thing: artificial grass hides staples beautifully.

There are sounds that become part of working somewhere for decades too. Asked what sound he most associated with upholstery, Scott answered simply: “Tacking guns.”

Then, after a moment: “And bad music.”
